Kathy Powell, Deputy Director and Finance Director
Tell us a little bit about your personal life.  I’m married to L.A. Powell, Jr, and we have 3 daughters, 3 sons-in-law and 7 grandchildren.  About two years ago we were able to build our dream home near Rimini in Sumter County and enjoy the benefits of “country living”.  Along with spending time with my family, I enjoy being outdoors and am a country girl at heart!  I relax by working in our yard and garden, four wheeling, driving a tractor and playing with our grandchildren when they come to visit.  A long-time member of Pinewood Baptist Church, I enjoy taking an active part in our music ministry and teaching a Sunday School class of my peers.

When did you start working at the COG?  May 1987

What is your current position?  Deputy Director and Finance Director

Sum up your job in one sentence.   Always challenging with never a dull moment!

Have you always been in your current position?   I have always been the Finance Director but have also been the Deputy Director since 2005.

What is the project, program, activity, event that you are most proud of?   When I was hired in 1987, SLRCOG was virtually bankrupt.  Being able to work with Executive Management and the Board of Directors to rebuild SLRCOG on the foundational values of sound fiscal management, hard work and integrity has been extremely gratifying.  I am most proud of the fact that these basic values are still a critical part of the Board’s and Executive Management’s philosophy and that we are continually striving to improve our financial and programmatic management as well as SLRCOG’s services to and relationships with our member local governments, funding agencies and other customers.

What COG related project, program, activity, event are you most looking forward to?  Since a fire in our main office building in September 2014, the SLRCOG staff has been temporarily housed in two different locations.  Executive staff members are working closely with a Task Force Committee of our board to identify our new “home”, and I am looking forward to taking an active part in making the dream a reality!
